Retinol and Vitamin C — Can You Use Both?
Yes, you can use retinol and Vitamin C. No, you probably shouldn't slather them on at the same moment. These two are some of the best-studied ingredients in skincare, and they each earn their reputation — but they work best on different schedules.
Vitamin C is a daytime antioxidant. It brightens, evens tone, and shields your skin from free radicals generated by UV and pollution. It thrives in the morning, sitting under your sunscreen like a second line of defence.
Retinol, on the other hand, is a nighttime renovator. It speeds up cell turnover, softens fine lines, and refines texture. It's photosensitive and can make your skin more reactive to the sun, which is why the industry standard is to apply it at night.
Layered together in one routine, they can leave sensitive skin feeling tight, flaky, or red — not because they cancel each other out (that old myth has been debunked), but because your barrier is being asked to do too much at once. Split them: Vitamin C in the AM, retinol in the PM. Always follow with SPF the next morning.
If you're just starting, ease in slowly. Two nights a week of retinol is a perfectly respectable place to begin.
