The Correct Order to Layer Your Skincare
Skincare layering has one golden rule: thinnest to thickest. Water-based products go on first, oil-based and occlusive products go on last. If a heavy cream lands on your skin before a watery essence, the essence has nowhere to go.
A reliable AM order looks like this: cleanser, toner, water-based serum (think hydration or brightening), eye cream, moisturizer, and sunscreen as the final step. Sunscreen is not optional and it always comes last on skin, before makeup.
PM is where you add repair. After cleansing and toning, this is the moment for actives like retinol, exfoliating acids, or peptides — but never all at once. Follow with a richer moisturizer, and finish with a facial oil or sleeping mask if your skin is thirsty.
Wait 30 to 60 seconds between layers so each product can settle in. And keep the routine short enough that you'll actually do it every night. A five-step routine done consistently will always outperform a ten-step routine done twice a week.
